Mrauk U

History of Mrauk U

Founded by the Rakhine King “Min Saw Mon” 1433, Mrauk U is known to have once been one of the most powerful kingdoms in Myanmar’s history. During its prime, Mrauk U used to be a leading trade city with an extensive network of canals that attracted large and small trading vessels into the heart of the city. Vibrant trade flourished with distant countries in the Middle East and Asia and further still with European countries like Holland, Portugal and Spain. The great Mrauk U Dynasty ruled for about 352 years.

Mrauk U was also known as “Myohaung”, meaning the ‘Ancient City’. Today, all one can see of this ancient city are ruins of the once functional pagodas. Out of them, seventy are known while a large number are yet to be discovered.
