Putao (Kachin State)

Putao is a town in the far north of Kachin State and is close to the Hkakaborazi Mountain which at 5,889m is the highest in Myanmar. In fact, Hkakaborazi means ‘snowcapped all year round’. Putao and the surrounding area lie above the Tropic of Cancer, in a zone characterized by subtropical, broadleaf, evergreen forest up to 2000m. The inhabitants of Putao are mostly Kachin, Lisu, Bamar, Shan and some small tribes.
